Child Success Story: 11-year-old Gianna changes her snack habits, reduces BMI percentile 5 points**
Gianna did not feel in control of what she was eating. “Before Kurbo, I didn’t put any thought into what I was eating. I didn’t think I could make a change. Getting into the New Year I just wanted to be healthier.” After Gianna received a phone for Christmas, she told her mom, “I want to try Kurbo!” She tried the app but found that they wanted to take it to the next level by signing up for a personal health coach.
Coach Christina pumped Gianna up and kept her motivated. “Gianna’s eyes light up during her coaching calls,” says Vicki, Gianna’s mom. “Coach Christina was nice, accommodating, and encouraging. Gianna was a bit shy at first but she built a rapport with her.”
Gianna didn’t want to stop their coaching sessions after the first three months and asked to continue for another 3 months. “Coach Christina is really nice, I really like her. She is really helpful in helping me set goals for myself. She always tells me I’m doing really well and helps me set goals like running a mile without stopping. Her encouragement keeps me motivated.”
Changing her snack habits was a key ingredient to her success. Vicki notes, “I knew our basic eating habits were ok, it was just our extra red light snacks, like Cheetos and shakes. Our biggest change was in the snacking. Our snacking habits are different now. We have green and yellow light snack foods such as unsweetened applesauce, and air-popped popcorn. Gianna doesn’t take multiple snacks to her room after school. I see her making choices now, trade-offs.” Gianna agrees, “I have been able to focus on snacking less and when I do, I go for healthier foods now. For instance, instead of crackers, I choose pomegranate seeds.”
Tracking in the Kurbo app was beneficial for Gianna’s healthy habits. “Tracking helped me understand that some foods were healthier than others and I was able to snack less. I found the app easy to use because I could track what I ate in a simple way. I could just look up the portions. I would definitely recommend other kids try the app, it’s pretty simple to use and it can really make a big impact in your life and to help you make healthy changes.”
Gianna exercises more now as well. “I go for a lot of runs and walks after school.” Typically she will go to a nearby park and run for 1-2 miles at a time and has found using a running app helpful. When the family was preparing for a vacation, Coach Christina helped the family with exercise ideas and healthy road trip snacks. When they reached their destination, the whole family hiked together. Gianna was the driving force that pushed the entire family to chose a harder hike than they would have normally chosen. This change in Gianna excites her mom because now they can all enjoy physical activity together at home and on vacation.
Her parents were engaged and supportive. “My mom’s always there for my weekly meeting. She reminds me to take a run. When I find a healthy recipe I want to try, she will make it for me.” Vicki says, “I’m really proud of her, she’s doing a great job. I wish we had done Kurbo a long time ago. I can tell she feels better about herself.”
Gianna is more confident and feels better about the food choices she is making now. “It surprised me how easy it was to switch over and make healthy choices. I like to remember that I’m doing it for bigger impact and that the small things will add up to something bigger. I don’t worry as much about what I eat. I know I’m going to make better decisions. I also know going to the doctor won’t be as stressful.”
You are an inspiration, Gianna!
