Kurbo Success Story: 13 year-old Tyler’s BMI percentile decreased by 7% on Kurbo!**

Categories:Health Coaching, Success Stories

Tyler wasn’t very happy with his weight and was looking for something that could teach him how to be healthy and make a true difference in his life. Kurbo was that perfect something.**

“When I started using the Kurbo app I wasn’t used to tracking what I ate, but I learned quickly. Now everything I eat, I track. Kurbo also taught me which foods were good for me and which weren’t and how to figure out portion sizes.”

With this new knowledge, Tyler was excited to work with his Kurbo coach to set his weekly goals.

Tyler always looked forward to his weekly coaching sessions! Coach Thea was a source of support and assistance. She encouraged him to talk about the past week’s obstacles and successes and then, together, they would create new food and exercise goals. These goals were always reasonable and gradual. If Tyler achieved his weekly goal to exercise for 20 minutes a day, his challenge for the next week would be to add 10 more minutes of “sweaty” activity to his daily exercise routine!

Kurbo has empowered Tyler to make his OWN healthy choices.

“After the third week on Kurbo, I would see how many red-lights I still had for the week and then make my own decisions about what and when to eat. I budgeted and I planned my meals accordingly. I started eating lean steak and chicken, more salads and vegetables (broccoli and green beans are my favorite), and at breakfast, more eggs and less cheese and wheat toast instead of white. I also really love fruit. The days when I don’t have fruit, I end up feeling awful and tired. So now I try to add fruit to almost every meal.”

Tyler also started infusing some fun, new exercises into his day to gain control over his weight.

2 days a week, Tyler now participates in fitness activities at the Riekes Center in Menlo Park, California. He either plays cardio-based games, like tag, with a group of kids or does core exercises one-on-one with an instructor.

“When I go to the Riekes Center, I can be myself,” says Tyler.  “I don’t get judged. It feels like a family there. You walk in and everyone knows your name! I love going there to hang out with friends and exercise.”

Tyler also started playing football almost everyday after school and goes on walks on the weekends. He realized that the trick to enhancing his weekly fitness was to find the types of exercise he found most enjoyable. Before Kurbo, Tyler exercised 2 times a week. Now, he is proud to report that exercise has become an everyday routine!

Not only is Tyler more confident and in control, but he has a new-found energy that keeps him motivated to achieve his Kurbo goals.

“Overall I have more energy, during the day and especially at school. I like feeling energized and this motivates me to reduce my red lights and stay healthy. When I started Kurbo, I had 14-15 red-lights per day. Now I typically have 6-7 a day. Sometimes I do go over, but I don’t get discouraged. Instead, this inspires me to get back on track. I have cut my red-lights in half. Once, without trying, I even ate only 2 red lights in one day!”

But Tyler couldn’t have done it without the support and encouragement from his mom and dad.

Tyler’s parents were both very involved in helping him achieve his Kurbo goals. His mom started helping Tyler reduce his red-lights by limiting it to only one in his breakfast and lunch and his dad helped train Tyler for football. With all of his practice and training, Tyler aced his football tryouts and made the team! Tyler also loves to cook with his dad and they incorporated some Kurbo techniques into their recipes, like using nonfat plain Greek yogurt to make chicken salad, instead of mayo.

Tyler’s mom, Stacey, is grateful for the newly improved, positive environment Kurbo has created at home!

“I wanted Tyler to do Kurbo because everything that my husband and I were doing as a family to be supportive of Tyler was not working. Our attempts to be helpful with Tyler’s food choices created a wedge between us.”

Kurbo’s personal coaching took parental oversight out of my hands when it came to food choices.  It shifted our family dynamic.  We no longer monitor what Tyler is eating.  We are now in a supportive role and are there to encourage healthier choices.  But we are no longer playing food police.”

Happier and healthier, Tyler recommends Kurbo to any kid or teen looking to proactively change their eating and exercise habits.

“I would recommend Kurbo to everyone I know, because it has had such a big impact on the choices I make. A friend once told me how healthy it was to eat a loaf of bread. I told him that was 7-8 red-lights and that he should get the Kurbo app! I use what I have learned from Kurbo everyday. It has really changed my life.”

Kurbo is so proud of Tyler and his success in creating healthy lifestyle change and reducing his BMI. Congratulations to Tyler and his family on an incredible Kurbo journey!
